This week, I’ve been furthering my research in Machine Learning, specifically ML applied to healthcare. There are a variety of ways it is being implemented in the Biotech space already, such as computer vision in surgery bots, and diagnostic tools. I’m interested in a particular field however: Oculomics. Oculomics is the field of diagnosing diseases through OCT Scans (emerging technology for performing high-resolution eyes scans) that aren't directly related to the eye, such as diagnosing Parkinson's with an eye scan(which usually requires a brain scan along with symptoms to diagnose). How exactly is this possible, and why am I interested? To keep its surface level, an image recognition model is trained to recognize patterns in the retina which are associated with certain diseases and can recognize markers of that disease with only an eye scan. This is extremely new and has the potential to revolutionize the medical industry. I want to catch that train before it leaves. Other than my research, I have completed my interview questions and my resume. I am building a contact list to reach out to and I’m constantly updating my website. I can't wait to find a mentor who can provide me with their input and who I can learn from.
