This week, I dove further into Oculomics, specifically looking into the inner workings, efficacy, and accuracy of the process. I researched the origins of a recent study into the application of Oculomics into Parkinson's that astonished the world with its groundbreaking results. I looked into specific biomarkers in the retina that are indicative of different diseases, such as Amyloid Beta plaque and tau protein deposits, which are signs of neurodegenerative disease. These biomarkers are recorded as part of a retinal scan and fed to an Image Recognition model which determines likelihood of disease. Over the past week, I’ve contacted around 5 people regarding a mentorship, and I haven’t gotten any responses yet. So far, it’s only been UTD professors and employees at a local company called SAANS Health, which focuses on the application of AI to healthcare. This week, I'm planning to contact around 10 more people at UTD and SAANS Healthcare, as well as branch out to UNT professors who I’ve heard contact students back much faster. The topic proposal is due later this week and the current plan is to submit something about Machine Learning applied to healthcare, so I can delve further into diagnostics using AI.
